Egypt U20 head coach Osama Nabih has acknowledged the immense challenge his team faces after being drawn into the highly competitive Group B for the 2025 U20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Côte d’Ivoire. The Young Pharaohs will compete against football powerhouses Nigeria, Morocco, and South Africa in the tournament scheduled from April 26 to May 18.
A Formidable Group B: Egypt’s Roadblocks and Opportunities
Group B is considered the ‘Group of Death’ due to the rich history and pedigree of its teams. Nigeria, the reigning WAFU B champions, hold an unparalleled record in the U20 AFCON with seven titles, while Egypt has secured the trophy four times (1981, 1991, 2003, 2013). Morocco, champions in 1997, bring significant North African flair, and South Africa, although yet to claim the title, consistently performs well in African youth tournaments.

Nabih recalled the storied rivalry between Egypt and Nigeria, particularly the memorable 2005 final in Benin Republic, where Nigeria triumphed 2-0. However, he remains optimistic about his team’s chances, citing their preparation and determination as key factors.

Nabih’s Perspective on the Challenge Ahead
Speaking to the Egypt FA, Nabih admitted the difficulty of the draw but expressed unwavering confidence in his players. “This is undoubtedly the toughest group, but we trust in our abilities. With effort and hard work, we can overcome these challenges and secure qualification for the World Cup,” he stated.

The top four teams from the U20 AFCON will earn spots at the FIFA U20 World Cup in Chile later in the year, adding immense pressure and motivation. Nabih emphasized the importance of thorough preparation, highlighting a robust training program and several friendly matches to build team cohesion.
“We have already started serious preparations and will continue with our planned friendlies to ensure our squad achieves the required harmony,” Nabih added, underscoring the resilience historically shown by Egyptian youth teams.

Group Overviews and Competitive Edge
While Group B presents the biggest challenge, the tournament also features strong competition in other groups. Hosts Côte d’Ivoire face DR Congo, Ghana, Tanzania, and a UNIFFAC representative in Group A, while defending champions Senegal will battle Zambia, Kenya, and Sierra Leone in Group C. With only four World Cup slots available, the tournament promises high-stakes encounters.

Final Thoughts: Egypt’s Determination and AFCON Expectations
Nabih’s optimism is rooted in Egypt’s history of defying the odds. “For Egyptian teams, the impossible gives us hope. We will give our best to achieve our dreams,” he declared, calling for solidarity from all stakeholders as the Young Pharaohs aim for AFCON glory and a World Cup berth. As anticipation builds, fans eagerly await a tournament that promises to be one of the most fiercely contested in recent memory.
