Super Eagles Receive a Major Lift as Maduka Okoye Returns from Injury
Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the2026 FIFA World Cup have been revived with the return of Maduka Okoyefrom injury. The Super Eagles goalkeeper, who has been out of action for over a month, is now fit and available for selection ahead of the must-win qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe in March 2025.

Okoye, 24, had been sidelined since December after undergoing surgery to repair a torn scapholunate ligament in his right wrist. However, his successful rehabilitation means he is now back in full training with his club, Udinese, just in time for Nigeria’s crucial fixtures.
Maduka Okoye’s Injury and Road to Recovery
The talented shot-stopper sustained his injury during a Serie A match against Genoa, forcing him to undergo surgery at Milan’s La Madonnina Clinic. His recovery process was closely monitored, and medical experts initially feared he could be out for a longer period.

However, Okoye’s commitment to rehabilitation has seen him return ahead of schedule. His presence in training has already boosted *Udinese, and now, *Nigeria will hope to benefit from his return.
Nigeria’s Struggles in World Cup Qualification
The Super Eagles have endured a disappointing start to their World Cup qualifying campaign. With *zero wins in four matches, they currently sit in a precarious position in their group. *Back-to-back victories against Rwanda and Zimbabwe are now non-negotiable if they are to keep their qualification dreams alive.

The arrival of new head coach Eric Chelle means the team is in transition, and the return of Maduka Okoye provides much-needed experience and leadership at the back.
Despite his return to fitness, Okoye is currently under investigation in Italy for allegedly placing a bet on himself to receive a yellow card during a Serie A match against Lazio in March 2024.
The Italian Football Federation and betting authorities have flagged irregular betting patterns, with reports suggesting that Okoye’s 64th-minute booking for time-wasting triggered an alert from Italian bookmaker Sisal.

While the investigation continues, Okoye remains focused on his football, hoping to put the controversy behind him as he looks to regain his spot as Nigeria’s No. 1 goalkeeper.
